So you want to jump into the sport of Wing Surfing, but have no idea what size board, wing, or foil to buy? You are not alone! Wing foiling is the fastest-growing water sport in Canada, and choosing the right gear is the difference between struggling on the water and flying effortlessly.
How to Choose the Right Wing Foil Board Size
The golden rule of wing foil boards is understanding volume (measured in Litres). As a general baseline: 1 Litre of board volume supports 1 Kilogram of rider weight. Therefore, a 100L board will just barely float a 100kg (220lb) rider. Your ideal board choice depends entirely on your skill level and weight.
-
Beginner (Your Weight in KG + 40L):
This gives ample float and will allow you to stand on the board and balance with little to no forward speed. Boards like the Slingshot Ultra-Fly Inflatable (120L) or larger Wing Craft models are perfect here. You will sit high in the water, making it incredibly easy to catch the wind and pop onto the foil.
-
Intermediate (Your Weight in KG + 10L):
Having a board that floats slightly more than your weight allows you to use a smaller, more nimble shape. It still has enough volume to float you, but it will be slightly "tippy" and require a little forward momentum from the wing to stabilize before you stand up.
-
Advanced (Your Weight in KG - 15L):
At this volume, you are riding a "sinker" board. You will need to submerge the board to get onto it, which requires highly efficient wing pumping and stronger winds. The payoff is an incredibly nimble setup that allows for hard carves, wave riding, and massive jumps.

Choosing Your Foil: Slingshot One-Lock Sizing
The hydrofoil is what gets you out of the water. We highly recommend the Slingshot One-Lock Foil System for its tool-less simplicity and interchangeable parts. Your front wing choice dictates your lift and speed.
-
Beginner / Light Winds (High Lift): You want the biggest front wing you can get, such as the Slingshot One-Lock Ease 1850. A massive wing creates immediate lift at very low speeds, making it easy to get up. The wider wingspan provides excellent rail-to-rail stability, reducing the "tippy" feeling.
-
Intermediate / Medium Winds (Cruising & Carving): At this level, your wing-handling efficiency has improved. You can step down to a medium surface area like the One-Lock 1550. This gives you plenty of low-end grunt to get up, but it will be much faster and easier to carve through turns.
-
Advanced / High Winds (Speed & Agility): Once you are extremely efficient at pumping both the wing and the board, you can drop down to high-aspect setups like the One-Lock Glide 1125. A smaller, thinner front wing lets you ride much faster, lay into aggressive carves, and boost jumps. Just remember: smaller foils require significantly more wind and board speed to generate lift!

Slingshot SlingWing Wind Range Chart - Build Your Wing Quiver
Your hand-held wing is your engine. Most adult riders in Canada build a two-wing quiver to cover a variety of lake conditions, but if you are buying just one, a 5.0M or 5.5M is the most common starting size for average summer winds.
The latest Slingshot SlingWing features a tighter canopy for immediate power delivery and less required pumping. Use this chart to match wing size to the wind conditions (measured in knots/mph):
