Shuswap Ski & Board - Tariffs & Price Increases, April 30/25
As we have all seen, the tariff and price increase situations are changing so fast it’s hard to keep track. So we are sharing our approach to dealing with these issues and how we plan to protect our Customers as much as possible. Since 1996 Shuswap Ski & Board has been dedicated to helping our customers maximize their enjoyment of our products and services in safe and fun-filled ways. Our Customer Service Policies are the best and most extensive in the industry and that way of looking after our Customers will continue through these crazy times.
Here’s are the key points you should know and, for those who want to know more, an in-depth explanation follows.
* No tariffs or increased prices if we did not have to pay extra!
* We currently have about $2,000,000 of unaffected product in stock!
* If forced to pay extra, we’ll only pass 50% of the tariff/increase on!
* If an extra cost applies, customers will be advised ASAP!
* Immediate, full refund to those not prepared to accept extra cost!
More Details: As most people know, in response the President Trump announcing tariffs on Canadian goods coming into the U.S., Canada began instituting 25% import tariffs on certain U.S made goods coming into Canada on March 3, 2025. On March 13, 2025, Canada added more products to the list of those being charged the 25% import tariff. The U.S. also announced tariffs would be charged on products coming into the U.S. from most countries around the world. Products coming from China were hit especially hard. With so much of what we sell coming from China and other eastern countries, almost all our suppliers announced price increases. Many, relatively small, increases were initially scheduled to go into effect April 15th. Unfortunately, that was short lived and all changed.
As of now, we are facing increased costs on just about everything we carry by 10 to 25%. Most of the watersports products, that are not made in the U.S., still come to Canada through the U.S.
With the U.S. applying a 104% tariff on goods from China, some suppliers are delaying or cancelling orders on effected items. This is bound to cause shortages on products, that had not arrived before the 104% tariff was announced.
As Canada’s largest watersports retailer, we had to book most of our product in the August/September 2024 time frame, otherwise our suppliers would not be able to supply the amount of gear we need. Therefore, most of those orders were not impacted by tariffs or price increases. However, products that we, or our suppliers, had not received before the tariffs and all future orders to those brands will cost more.
Some Good News: Luckily we have approximately $2,000,000 worth of great gear in stock, that was not subject to tariffs or price increases. This means we are well stocked on most of the best-selling products and that stock should have lasted most of the summer. We believe concerns about tariffs and price increases have caused the small up surge in business we’re experiencing. We are cautiously optimistic that our stock will last for a while yet and that we should have to do minimal reorders, for products coming in at higher prices.
More Good News: We will only charge 50% of the tariff or price increase percentage, on items that we have to pay more for! Yes, there will also be some things we just won’t be able to get. However, on anything you need, that is impacted by tariffs or price increases, that we can still get, will incur a price increase. We hope you agree with us, that sharing the extra cost equally is a further example of our dedication to Customer Service and help keep summer 2025 a fun one.
Remember “It’s Always Summer!” at Shuswap Ski & Board.
