Shuswap Lake To Host World Wakeboard Championships From Medellin, Colombia, Mr Andres Botero, President of the International Water Ski Federation (IWSF), announced today, that the organisation has accepted Shuswap Lake Waterski and Wakeboard Centre's bid to host the 2002 IWSF World Wakeboard Championships on Shuswap Lake, in Scotch Creek, British Columbia, Canada. We should point out that their are currently two World Wakeboard Championship events. One is IWSF (International Water Ski Federation) sanctioned, while the other is under the control of the World Wakeboard Association (WWA). Although, Toronto has played host to the IWSF World Waterskiing Championships, this is will be the first time Canada has been honoured with the IWSF World Wakeboard Titles. The dates have tentatively been set as September 19 to 22, 2002 but have yet to be finalised. Canada's Shuswap Ski and Board beat out a strong opposing bid from the Singapore contingent who had hosted a very successful IWSF World Waterskiing Championships in 1997. When reached for comment, at Scotch Creek, on the shores of the Shuswap, the ski and board centre's director, Mike Gazley, had this to say. " After my involvement with Alberta in hosting, the World Junior Championships a few years ago It became a dream of mine to win another prestigious event for Canada. Oh yeah, and did I forget to say, April Fools!!" Yes, there really will be two different world wakeboard championships this year, and no, the IWSF has not awarded the 2002 event just yet. Maybe by then the two governing bodies will get together, but then that's another story all together. Susi Graham announces retirement. Big Air Winner Joins Coaching Staff Shuswap Ski & Board Director, Mike Gazley, is pleased to announce that Josh McLean who took home both top cash prizes at the '99 Big Air Contest has officially joined the school's coaching staff. Mike began coaching Josh four seasons ago during a week-long clinic he conducted on the Shuswap and the two have become friends and continued to ride together since.
Josh became a certified waterskiing and wakeboarding coach two years ago and this winter added snowboarding certification to his coaching credentials. At nineteen, Josh is a UCC Tourism Management student who spends his weekends on the water or the mountain. He has helped out at the school, over the past two seasons and will take a much more active roll this year. Like most kids who live by the lake, he enjoyed summers water skiing with his family for many years. About four years ago he bought himself a Wake Tech Magic Air and got hooked on wakeboarding.
Josh is also an avid snowboarder with numerous ways to get upside down on both boards and he has promised to blow the dust off his slalom ski and do some skiing again this year. He will continue to help out in the marina's Board Shop while spending a lot more time coaching than in the past. Josh has a relaxed, friendly coaching style and is also committed to the ongoing development of his skills so we are confident our students and guests will enjoy being on the water with him.
