Pro Tour - Detroit Eevent Results
Brighton, MI - Freddy Krueger needed only one jump in Sunday's Ski Fly Finals of the U.S. Pro Water Ski and Wakeboard Detroit Event to take home the victory. Krueger's first effort in the finals was 260 feet and good enough to earn him the $7,000 first place check.
The $20,000 Ski Fly purse was only part of the story in Ski Fly at Island Lake State Park. Looming in the background of the Ski Fly event was a hefty $100,000 bonus for any Ski Flyer who could make the magical distance of 322 feet and take home the MasterCraft Vortec Vault.
The win is Krueger's first on the Pro Tour in 2001. Canadian, Jaret Llewellyn had won both of the previous Pro Tour Ski Fly events.
Krueger was the top seed going into the final after finishing first in the semifinals Sunday morning with a jump of 268 feet, the best effort of the day behind the Indmar Marine Engine MasterCraft Beast. When Krueger came off the dock to start his first and only run in the finals, Jason Seels held
the best jump of the day at 253 feet. Seels had jumped 260 feet in the semifinals Sunday morning, but he couldn't equal that effort in the finals.
In the Men's Slalom Final the story again is Andy Mapple. Mr. Everything in slalom skiing found himself in unfamiliar territory after finishing in the middle of the pack during Saturday's semifinals.
But, that didn't matter much, Mapple just went out and put up a run of 4 buoys at 39 off, then sat back and watched the rest of the field try to catch him. No one did. Jamie Beauchesne had the best chance. Beauchesne was the last skier off the dock in the men's final. He had a chance to catch
Mapple, but couldn't missing by ¾ of a buoy, finishing with 3 ¼ @39.
Beauchesne again sits in very familiar territory, finishing in the top three in each Pro Tour event in 2001. Still, he has been the only skier to consistently push Mapple.
In the Women's Slalom Final, a familiar face returned to the top of the victor's podium. Kristi Overton-Johnson, the 2000 Pro Tour Season Champion, picked up her first win of 2001. Overton-Johnson became the first women to beat Emma Sheers in any event on the Pro Tour in 2001. Sheers had won both previous women's slalom events in 2001 as well as the only women's ski fly
event in Ft. Lauderdale.
But, on Sunday Overton-Johnson found a way to win skiing early and setting the tone with a run of 3 @ 38. Close on her heels were Jill Knutson and Natalie Hamrick who finished second and third respectively.
In the Men's Wakeboarding Finals Shaun Murray ended Darin Shapiro's supremacy of the Pro Tour in 2001, claiming the Detroit Championship. Brett Eisenhauer finished second and Parks Bonifay rounded out the top three.

Malibu Open Results, from June 9 & 10
Wilmington, Illinois - The final day of the inaugural Malibu Open Water Ski & Wakeboard Championship provided challenges for many top athletes. Swirling winds made conditions very interesting. However, these dicey conditions only strengthened the resolve of the top athletes and some top-notch performances were turned in.
No athlete's star shined any brighter than Emma Sheers'. Earlier this season she walked away with two wins in one day in the women's slalom and ski fly events. In Sunday's finals of the Malibu Open, Sheers duplicated her performance, but this time it was for a major championship and against nothing but the top athletes in the sport.
In the ski fly event, which was hampered by high winds, she calmly went out and threw down the top two jumps of the day. Her effort in the first heat on Sunday was 217 feet just short of the world record she owns.
Sheers wasn't finished there. She moved over to the other lake at Water's Edge to take home the women's slalom championship. Again Sheers battled the wind, which really seemed to bother the rest of the field. But, Sheers seemed to thrive in the atmosphere, coming from fourth place on day
one to first place in the final.
Sheers was not the only Australian to make a statement in the finals of the Malibu Open. Fellow Aussie and men's wakeboarder, Daniel Watkins, seemed to like the pull of the Indmar Marine Engine powered Malibu Wake Setter. Watkins came from fourth place in Saturday's First Round to a resounding first place in the Finals to take home the Malibu Open Championship, his first win in 2001.
Watkins win came against tough competition. It seemed that every men's competitor, no matter how far behind they fell on day one, was still trying to bring home the winner's trophy. The men's wakeboard competition was the last event of the weekend, and it put an exclamation point on a
great weekend of competition.
The women's wakeboard competition preceded the men's finals, with Dallas Friday taking home a hard fought victory. Friday narrowly edged Maeghan Major for the victory, but it was Major who had a much better final. Friday won by virtue of a strong day on Saturday which put her in first
place going into Sunday's final.
In men's slalom Andy Mapple added yet another championship to his distinguished list of accomplishments. Mapple again made it look easy, outdistancing the competition by five buoys. Mapple has yet to lose any competition in 2001, but a pair of younger competitors Jason Paredes and Chris Parrish, who finished second and fourth respectively in the slalom finals, served notice there will be right there if Mapple falters.
In men's ski fly Jaret Llewellyn seems fully recovered from his injuries early this season. Llewellyn took home the Malibu Open title, but he didn't even have to ski on Sunday. Ski flying was called due to hazardous weather conditions caused by swirling winds.
In men's and women's tricks Cory Pickos took home top honors for men and Marina Mosti did the same for the women. Mosti, from Italy added a second place in women's ski fly to her accomplishments on the day.

$100,000 On The Line!
Orlando, FL - Just how far can the human body fly behind a boat? That is what MasterCraft, Vortec and the world's best professional ski flyers hope to find out in 2001 at the U.S. Pro Water Ski Tour. And if a Ski Flyer soars 322 feet, he'll fly away with a $100,000 bonus, the largest amount ever possible in the history of water skiing.
In 2000, ski flyers showed the world that a jump of 300 feet wasn't out of the question. A man with the right training, the right equipment and the right boat could fly the length of a football field. For years, everyone thought that 250 would be the magic mark for a ski jump. But, along came new skis and new equipment and new boats. Those improvements with the addition of a new ski jump and different rules made traditional ski jumping passe.
With two stops out of the way and no one laying claim to the bonus, it is down to the last two Pro Tour ski flying events of the year. First up is the Motor City, Detroit's Island Lake State Park on June 16-17. Ski flyers have had more than two months to practice behind MasterCraft's newest ski fly model, perfecting their takeoffs to get the most out of their flight. The season wraps up in Abbotsford, Canada July 28-29.
Unlike many other sports, competitors in ski flying are working together to raise the limits of the event. Current world record holder Jaret Llewellyn practices side-by-side with Freddy Krueger last year's Pro Tour season champion and current Pro Tour record holder. Throw Scot Ellis into the mix and you have a trio of hard chargers all going after the $100,000 prize.
But, that's not all. Ski flying has emerged as one of the top international competitions in all of water sports. Llewellyn hails from Canada while Krueger and Ellis are both from the U.S. Jason Seels has found his way into the top three in 2001 and he makes his home in Great Britain. Kyle Eade, known as the Kiwi, comes from New Zealand and then there is Curtis Sheers from neighboring Australia. All of these competitors will be battling it out to raise the level of competition in the sport.
BCWSA Coaching Conference June 15 to 17th
The Centre and School will be closed June 15 to 17th for our staff to attend a coaching conference being put on by the BCWSA. We appologize for the short notice but all the elements just came together to make this possible. Some of the top coaches and athletes in the country will be presenting, including our own Mike Gazley, and there will be an opportunity for those working on their coaching certification to earn their Level 1 Waterskiing Technical components. For more information contact the BCWSA's Director of Coaching Development, Dick Horwood via e-mail at dick@bcwsa.org ... see you there!
Canadian Skier Ryan Dodd Sets Record At 2001 Rolex Junior Masters Tournament
Up and coming Canadian water ski sensation Ryan Dodd (Olds, AB) served notice that he competes to win. Ryan performed an incredible jump of 54.5m (179 ft.), beating the next best competitor by 5.5m (18 ft.). This jump sets a course record and is a pending Canadian record. It also puts Ryan in the driver seat in tomorrow?s final round. ?This jump allows me to be seeded last in the finals, I?ll know what I need to do to win tomorrow before I even get off the dock? says Ryan.
In addition to his jumping, Ryan achieved a score of 7560 pts in tricks, just shy of his personal best. The run was good enough for a second place finish and secured a Ryan a spot in the tomorrow?s trick finals. ?I tried to go slow and put in a solid run,? says Ryan.

Shot last summer on Shuswap Lake with Cottage Life host, Linda Armstrong, the segment is scheduled to go to air next week, as part of a show that will begin airing Monday, March 12th and at 6:30 PM , Friday March 16th at 11 AM, and Sunday March 18th at 6:30 PM & 10:30 PM (these are Eastern times, 2 hours earlier in Mountain times zones and 3 hours earlier Pacific). The show airs on Home and Garden Television (HGTV), so check your local channel listing to see which channel HGTV is in your area and for Starchoice users it's channel 564. Although those of us at the Centre have not seen the segment yet, the folks at Cottage Life say they are very pleased with the way it turned out.
The show features the Centre's director, Mike Gazley, working with 9 year old Mark Acton on two skis, 11 year old Kendel Jurista wakeboarding and 29+ Alfie Ogston slalom skiing. In each case we focus on a couple of commom errors made while learning, with Cottage Life's Linda Armstrong, quizzing Mike on ways to correct these errors, as quickly and easily as possible. Enjoy the show.

Dec. 29, 2000 - INTRODUCING THE FX SLALOM
|
|
|
|
|
Over five years ago, Connelly changed the water ski industry forever with the introduction of the first parabolic "shaped" slalom. Connelly has again added another model to the seven slaloms and pairs that make skiing easier and fun again.
The new 2001 FX is a "hybrid" slalom, not as wide in the tip and tail as other shaped skis, yet not as narrow as conventional slaloms. The FX is part of Connelly's 2001 F series which feature a unique "chameleon" graphic finish that changes color in the light. "All of the new F-series skis offer top performance and fantastic graphic appeal" states Barney Gunnell owner of Gunnell's Marine Unlimited in Greenwood, South Carolina. "The FX, however, is my personal favorite graphically and on the water. You see, I want performance and fun. At 30 mph instead of 36 mph, water skiing is easier for me and the rest of the Baby Boomers. Yet, I still demand performance turns and speed, skiing recreationally, or on the slalom course at 38 off." Barney is actively skiing in the INT (International Novice Tour) and places in the top 3 on a National and State basis.
The FX features a stiffer forebody as a result of the unique C.A. P.T. (Connelly Advanced Profile Technology) construction. The ridges in the front of the ski not only provide stiffness and strength, they have been integrated into the appealing graphic design of the 2001 FX slalom. The FX comes in sizes 66" and 68" and will be a great addition to the Connelly ski line up for 2001.

Dec. 22, 2000 - MAPPLE NAMED PRODUCT MANAGER
ORLANDO, FL --- Christmas 2000 will be one to remember for Andy Mapple, 38, of Orlando, Florida, the number one slalom skier in the world. He has just been named product manager for Ski Nautique, announced Larry Meddock, vice president of Marketing and Special Events for Correct Craft.
Andy is so committed to the Ski Nautique product, that he is adding to his already busy waterskiing competition schedule to work with Correct Craft, said Meddock. In 2001, the Ski Nautique celebrates its 40th anniversary and in the 21st Century still leads the industry in innovation, performance and technology. It's fitting to have Mapple and his expertise become an even more integral part of our team.
Since Correct Craft introduced the Ski Nautique four decades ago, this world-famous boat has come to define the tournament ski boat industry. All current waterskiing world slalom and jump records have been set behind this state-of-the-art hull. Having Mapple focus his energies on continued product development and enhancement is expected to make an impact in the long-term.
My role initially, is to be available for Correct Craft customers and other skiers to show we are very committed to this product, Mapple explains. I am excited to reconfirm and build on the quality foundation of the Ski Nautique product and Correct Craft's involvement and interest in skiing.
Mapple, originally from Lancashire, England, is a 16-year resident of Florida, and is recognized hands down as the greatest slalom skier of all-time. In addition to 144 professional victories, Mapple is the twelve-time Masters Champion, an eleven-time world record holder, a five-time World Champion, a twelve-time Pro Water Ski Tour Champion, an eleven-time Australian Moomba Masters Champion and a nine-time U.S. Open Champion.
I am excited about my new position because it offers me a future opportunity to stay actively involved in the industry when my professional competitive career ends and I have to hang up the skis, Mapple said. The Ski Nautique is the best ski boat in the industry and has been tops for 40 years, but we can always take the best and make it better. That's always been Correct Craft's vision --- to be the leader and stay the leader. Correct Craft is committed to skiing in general, from top tournament competition to recreational skiing, and I'm thrilled to be part of this continuation as I transition to learn how things work behind-the-scenes from a manufacturing perspective.
For 2001, Correct Craft continues to meet and exceed the demands and desires of water skiers and wakeboarders, alike, around the world. Ahead of its time, Correct Craft remains the industry trendsetter as the oldest family-owned and operated boat manufacturer in the world.
Dec. 19, 2000 - COBE & BISCH TO RIDE FOR O'BRIEN
O'Brien welcomes the two new latest additions to our Global Team; Chris Bischoff and Cobe Mikacich. This landmark move adds two of the most dedicated and respected riders in the world to the O'Brien wakeboard division.
Starting right away, O'Brien will introduce a 141 cm signature board for Cobe that is scheduled for delivery in mid December 2000, just in time for the holidays and boat show season. Cobe has over six years in board design and development, and has been a top competitor and covered freerider for years. "This board is a result of all my years' experience as a rider," states Cobe. "It's exactly what I want!"
In addition, O'Brien is also a proud sponsor of Cobe and Bisch's Bus Tour. The Fantastic Voyage tour is already established as one of the industry's leading grassroots road tours. Aside from attending U.S. Pro Tour stops and many other major televised events, the Fantastic Voyage tour visits dealers all across the country hosting clinics, demo days and shop promotions. Here, consumers get a great opportunity to test out all the latest O'Brien gear and pick up riding tips, while visiting with Cobe, Bisch and others members of the O'Brien team.
"I'm stoked to be working with such a great company like O'Brien," says Bisch. "They have great resources and products that we can put into the hand of consumers everywhere through the Fantastic Voyage tour. We are also excited to be a part of developing new products along with the rest of the team."
A schedule of the planned tour dates will be out soon so everyone can get a chance to join in on the fun. "These guys are some of our industry's greatest spokesmen," explains Pete Surrette, O'Brien's V.P. of Sales. We look forward to getting our dealers to experience working with them on a one to one level.
Stay tuned for more exciting news coming from the O'Brien camp in 2000-01 as so many new things are just around the corner!
O'Brien International, Inc. is based out of Redmond, Washington and is the world's largest supplier of top quality towable watersports equipment and is a division of Earth & Ocean Sports.
Dec. 15, 2000 - JIMMY SIEMERS' WORLD RECORDS APPROVED
The International Water Ski Federation's Tournament Council has ratified U. S. athlete Jimmy Siemers' pending world jumping and overall records. Siemers set the records on October 22, 2000, at the TriLakes Late Bloomers Tournament in Zachary, Louisiana.
Siemers soars 233 feet on Connelly jumpers to break the former world record of 231 feet held by Canada's Jaret Llewellyn. Siemers' third round scores of 1.5 buoys at 38 off in slalom, 10,330 points in tricks and 233 feet in jumping set a pending world overall record of 2,717.12 points. Siemers' point total topped the former world overall record of 2,676.98 points, also held by Llewellyn, as well as a pending world record of 2,680.35 points set by France's Patrice Martin on October 18.
As a member of Team Connelly, Jimmy has spent a short lifetime setting and breaking national and world records. In July of 1998, at the U. S. Junior Water Ski Team trials, he won gold medals in tricks, jumping and overall. Three weeks later, he swept the tricks, jumping, and overall titles at the South Central Regional Championships. In August, as a member of the U. S. Junior Water Ski Team at the Pan American Championships in Winnipeg, he won gold medals in tricks, jumping and overall, and a bronze medal in slalom. Two more weeks down the road in Dijon, France, at the Junior Worlds, he won gold medals in tricks, jumping and overall to help the U. S. Team to the silver medal. His 10,590 points in tricks was later approved to be his third national tricks record of the season.
A recent high school graduate, the 18-year-old Siemers will be attending and skiing for Arizona State in the upcoming collegiate season. Also, look for Jimmy as a mainstay on the Pro Tour in 2001 and for many more years to come. Stay tuned for future records to follow.
Dec. 14, 2000 - INTERNATIONAL WATER SKI FEDERATION (IWSF)
NEW SPORTS REJECTED BY IOC 2004 OLYMPIC GAMES
At 1.00pm yesterday, December 13th., the International Olympic Committee
issued a statement in Lausanne, Switzerland, which rocked both the Greek
Nation and the sport of Waterskiing. The Working Group established by the
IOC to review the number of sports, athletes and disciplines in the Olympic
Games made a recommendation that no new sports should be added at this time.
This recommendation was ratified by the Executive Board of the IOC and
their formal surprise decision was announced by Francois Carrard, the IOC
Director General.
This is an enormous disappointment for Greece and the International Waterski
Federation. As hosts of the 2004 Olympics, they had unanamously accepted
that Waterskiing would be their sole choice of new sport to be added to the
Athens Games. Up to twenty four hours before this IOC announcement, the
Athens 2004 Organising Committee Games were planning on having Waterskiing
in the Games and discussions regarding suitable sites, costs and television
production had already taken place. The IOC refusal of the request of the
home of the Ancient Games to add it's choice of sport is unprecedented. In
fact in 1988 Tennis was added in Seoul, in 1992 Baseball and Badminton were
added in Barcelona, in 1996 Softball was added in Atlanta and this year,
Taekwando and Triathlon were added in Sydney.
For the International Waterski Federation and over 30 million Waterskiers,
this is also an enormous disappointment. The IWSF has spent 52 years
developing it's campaign for Olympic entry. For over 10 years, IWSF
President, Andres Botero and his team, have travelled the World to
communicate the plan to see Waterskiing in the Olympics. His shock
onpersonally hearing Wednesday's IOC announcement reflects the enormous
support gained from all 92 IWSF Federations around the globe, from hundreds
of thousands of Waterskiers and from the the Greek Nation itself. Andres
Botero expressed his special appreciation for all their invaluable help and
loyalty. While no mention was made by the IOC specifically naming
Waterskiing, the clear message is that for the 2004 Olympics in Athens, no
new sports will be added.
Immediately following the surprise IOC announcement in Lausanne, Andres
Botero, IWSF President, was beseiged by the World's Press for comments He
expressed his enormous disappointent both for Waterskiing and Greece. He
also reminded those present that Waterskiing still remains at the top of the
list for inclusion and that the decision for adding a new sport to the 2008
Games must be made in 2002. He expressed his special gratitude for all the
help, encouragement and support received from Waterskiers and supporters all
over the World and particularly from the Greek Nation. Without this support,
the sport of Waterskiing woud not be at the very top of the list for
Olympic entry and would not be so well known to the IOC.
Fifty two years is a long journey for any sport - and especially one which
includes 30 million participants in 92 countries. The profile of
Waterskiing has never been higher - and especially at Olympic level. A
sport with such a long and distinguished international background will not
change it's belief that it fully deserves to be on the Olympic stage and to
give it's youth a bright future. At this point, only the 2004 Olympics have
been ruiled out. Our work has not been wasted. Our Olympic structure is in
place. The experience gained is invaluable and we are already setting our
sights on 2008. China and France, two of the front contenders for the 2008
Olympics, are both strong Waterskiing supporters.
